All May, None must, some Should

It is said that confession is good for the soul! Now that sounds pretty silly but confession is good for us! It clears things up. It is like a car with a dirty carburetor that doesn’t run well versus one with a clean carburetor that sounds good and runs well! When we confess our sins we ‘get right’ with God! We feel good and we get a do over to try again.

I just finished writing an article for the Emblem, the newsletter of St. John in Kirkland, WA on the observances of Holy Week. Some churches include a service of repentance during Holy Week. This is frequently done on the Wednesday. Generally it is a simple service of song and reflection. Each person has the option of spending time with one of the priests to confess their sins. All are granted absolution even if they do not meet with a priest as individuals. I have always experienced a feeling of relief following the service and a sincere desire to try again.

I’ve heard it said of confession – all may, none must, some should. I know I am in the ‘some should’ group and am glad that I may!
