Mom stories

Jenn and I went to see my Mom on New Years. She told us stories of time past. I decided to write them done.

She connects an ice cream vendor with a time when a horse and wagon (cart) slid off the road in front of their home and into the ditch. It had been raining a lot and the ditch was full of water and very deep. The horse was trapped under the cart in danger of drowning. Sam, her father’s brother, ran out with a butcher knife and cut the traces to release the horse.

Sometimes when she tells this it was the ice cram vendor but the intense rain goes better with winter and sometimes it was the fella who delivered coal. I’m inclined to the coal delivery man based on the season. Sometimes she says it was their house in Seattle but I know Sam stayed in Montana and based on her age it had to be in Montana but not long before they moved to Seattle. Seattle does not fit with the depth of the ditch as the area they lived in never had significant ditches but the area they lived in in Montana did. Detective work is frequently associated with Mom’s stories!

On the other hand I do know the story itself is true as I remember Grandpa Donald telling me about it. Grandpa, my brother Steve and Harvey my Mom’s brother had taken the princess boat to Victoria. We saw a horse drawn carriage and Grandpa told the story of his brother, Sam, rescuing a horse by cutting the traces before it drowned in the ditch in front of their house.

More stories later.
