From a distance?

Here I am thinking after hearing a sermon at church! Wow! You mean people actually listen and think about what they hear? Yes indeed! It happens fairly often!

There is a popular song from Bette Midler in 1993-“From a Distance”. This song is a bit like a lot of life, in that if you only hear part of the lyrics it seems wonderful!

From a distance the world looks blue and green,
and the snow-capped mountains white.
From a distance the ocean meets the stream,
and the eagle takes to flight.
From a distance, there is harmony,
and it echoes through the land.
It’s the voice of hope, it’s the voice of peace,
it’s the voice of every man.
From a distance we all have enough,
and no one is in need.
And there are no guns, no bombs, and no disease,
no hungry mouths to feed.
From a distance we are instruments
marching in a common band.
Playing songs of hope, playing songs of peace.
They’re the songs of every man.

So far so good! But then it talks of God watching us from a distance. Just watching. This is the deist view where God set the whole thing in motion but does not interfere or take part in our lives. Our God lives in us, with us. He is present in our lives always there. From a distance? Nope…..our God is incarnate and that is the message of Christmas.
