When I was in first or second grade my Daddy gave me a small heart shaped box of chocolates for Valentine’s Day. They were caramels with either dark chocolate or milk chocolate coating. Only 6 or so pieces so a small box. I savored those chocolates; eating one every now and then until at last they were all gone.
I loved that my Daddy thought of me too when it was Valentine’s Day. Every year through grade school, junior high, high school and even college I was given a small box of chocolates for Valentine’s Day.
February 1972 I got a final box of chocolates from my Daddy. Glen and I were to be married the next month and when Daddy gave me that box he said “after this it is Glen’s job to buy the chocolates.”
Our first Valentine’s Day as a married couple Glen’s ship was in the Mediterranean. No chocolates but every year after that Glen would give me a box of chocolates for Valentine’s Day. Some years it was a good sized box. Other years just a small one and one year he handed me a single Hersey’s chocolate kiss. He admitted he had taken it from a bowl of them somewhere that was freely giving them out. He did not have any money to buy chocolates that year. Even so he said he knew it was his job to buy the chocolates.
